fixed, all error messages have gone and it scans correctly with thumbnails.
I had Java 8 installed from the synology package manager (8u90). There was a newer version on the oracle website 8u92.
Downloaded with "wget --no-check-certificate --no-cookies --header "Cookie: oraclelicense=accept-securebackup-cookie" http://download.oracle.com/otn-pub/java/jdk/8u92-b14/jdk-8u92-linux-x64.tar.gz"
Extracted and copied to the correct places, stopped and started ubooquity and now all is fine :)
